Okay, let me put this out there up front. The truth is, I'm not all that into Star Trek, but I feel obligated to post this because what spells Nerdtastic more than The Star Trek Movie?
The first trailer was consisted of the huge CG construct of the Enterprise, background voiceovers of famous space landings and launches, and the iconic "Space, the Final Frontier" quote. Not bad for a teaser trailer, and it did exactly what it was supposed to do: Rile the nerds up! It gave them enough to see potential, but not enough for them to truly be able to start crying foul.
Now the second trailer gave us a little more with a crazy desert police chase followed by a car doing a drift it wasn't made for and preteen Kirk leaping out of the car in an insane death-defying stunt. Right. I don't think they could have made this trailer scream "Not Your Daddy's Star Trek" any louder before they launched into the typical trailer explodo-fest that's so fitting for it's new summer release date (May 8 2009).
Okay, right. Time will tell if rabid Star Trek fans flock to this movie like Paramont is hoping for... and if the movie has been updated enough to pull in the general nerd audience.
Which brings me to...
Have you seen the cast list? It's packed with actors who've had their hand in all corners of nerddom:
Kirk is being played by Chris Pine (To make the girls happy--he has no identifiable nerd cred.)
Spock is being played by Zachary Quinto (Heroes)
Nero played by Eric Bana (Hulk--the doomed Ang Lee version)
Scotty played by Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead and the rest of his "Blood and Ice Cream Trilogy")
McCoy played by Karl Urban (Eomer from Lord of the Rings)
Sulu played by John Cho (Harold from Harold and Kumar)
And reprising his role as Old Spock, Leonard Nimoy (The One, The Only)
While I'm not surprised by the cast list, I have to say that I'm impressed. See them all here in the second trailer:

Or visit the Official Site
Or, if you have a lot of free time, check out the long tail at work as CBS has a significant amount of classic Star Trek episodes available to stream. At the very least, it'll make you appreciate the advances in CGI and movie technology.

This series is SO full of FAIL....
That I refuse to watch or read anything that has to do with it.
IT FREAKING PUSHED HBP BACK ANOTHER HALF YEAR. JERKS!!
And it would help if I learned to comment on the right threads.
I have to either supress this powerful nerd urge to go see this in the theaters or maintain my dignity and wait for it on DVD. Its not a date movie, but I can see youngsters grouping up and going to see this one. I can see the same crowd that went to see the 3 new Star Wars movies and the Transformers will probably be back to see this one.
I have to see this if only for Simon Pegg as Scotty.
If you look at all the old Star Trek movies, they weren't exactly quality cinema anyway. I mean "a journey home"? Terrible stuff.
On an amusing note, Shatner demanded that they write him into a major role in the movie even though his character died at the end of Generations, but I think they refused and only offered him a bit part.
Scylar is gonna eat your BRAINS!
My Trekkie is excited. Something about new alien races or whatnot.
Guess this is gonna be a date movie for me. :-P
I don't understand why going to see this movie in theaters means not maintaining your dignity.
There were a lot of nerd movies that were totally acceptable to see in theaters (Spider Man, Superman, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter).
This is also no worse a date movie than say, Casino Royale. And there have also been lots of date movies that were not worth seeing in theaters (Maid in Manhattan?). Just saying...
Said you, "Okay, right. Time will tell if rabid Star Trek fans flock to this movie like Paramont is hoping for... "
Are you kidding?! Original OLD Trekkies such as yours truly (those born in the ::gasp:: '60s) are going to be flocking to this film just in order to relieve their wasted (multiple-senses) teenage years. ::chuckle:: We're going to be able to want to be young again (if only for a couple of hours and $40 poorer—conservative est. based on today's dollar value: $10 movie, $20 popcorn and soda, $10 gas/BART/parking) via osmosis from the silverscreen, seeing all that backwards chronological projection of their Trek heroes of yore. ;p
On the other hand, the economy might be at a full blown depression level by summer, hence no one is going to be going to movies any more. (In fact, I'd wager that numerous blockbuster productions are going to be yanked should the worst occur.)
On the other other hand, there'll be millions of unemployed people just milling around, looking for an excuse to numb their desperate selves, and so and escapist flick like this will be just the ticket. (But only if the ticket itself won't cost too much. Bah, humbug.)
LoL, your Trekkie. So funny, now we know what to get him for Christmas. XD
And that's the question... during recession time what the studios really want to know, are you (like the 13 year old girls and Twilight) going to see this movie twice in one weekend?? ;D
Btw, I don't know if there are Costcos in Maui, but always buy the discount tickets! (I regularly walk around with 2 AMC tickets and 2 Regal tickets in my wallet...sometimes it's actually currency to some people ;D)
